- Chapter: 10 — The Past Never Dies · Type: Main mission
- Location: Mauritania (the black-market city of Aleph)
- Length: ~1h 29m · Challenges: 24 · Collectibles: 12
- Goal: Get into the auction, locate 009, and get out alive
This is one of the longest, most open-ended chapters in the campaign. Bond and Greenway roll into Aleph — a sprawling black market built around a beached shipwreck — chasing the trail of agent 009. The whole middle of the mission is a sandbox: you have to scrape together a $100,000 entry fee before you can buy your way into the auction, and there are several different ways to earn it.
The chapter opens on the road into the city. Drive the Defender toward Aleph and keep the vehicle reasonably intact — taking too much damage along the way is discouraged. When you arrive, you're funnelled into the market on foot.
Stick with Greenway as he leads you through the shipwreck and into Aleph proper. You'll lose him briefly inside the wreck — work through the interior, where a small group of thugs ambushes you. Drop them in hand-to-hand combat, then push through the door to rejoin Greenway. He takes you to the auction entrance, where you learn the catch: getting in costs $100,000 and an invitation.
This is the heart of the chapter and the most open part. The black market is dotted with money-making opportunities, and you only need to hit $100k — you do not have to do all of them. Pick whichever suit your playstyle:
- Crypto wallet job (~$50,000). A multi-step heist: hack a guard's phone, dart patrolling enemies, pickpocket a wallet, get into the base, and plug the recovered wallet into the signal-tower antenna.
- Scorpius deal (~$52,000). Retrieve a burner phone and deliver it to container 76, then hold off the security that shows up.
- Fight Pit (~$60,000). Win three back-to-back melee bouts in the arena.
- Jewel of Jahari (~$30,000). A rigged shell/cup game — use Bond's Q-Lens during the reveal to track the gem. See the full Jewel of Jahari guide for the exact trick.
- Shooting range (~$30,000). Hit all ten targets cleanly without a miss.
Combining any two big earners (or a big one plus a smaller one) clears the threshold.
With the fee paid, you're brought inside. Place your bids, then deal with the polygraph the seller uses to vet buyers — hack the machine so your cover story reads as truthful, answer the screening questions, and offer MI6 intel as leverage. Afterwards you speak with Barkhad Ali, who points you toward 009.
Make your way out to the boats moored against the wreck. Use the zipline to cross to the next ship, then squeeze through the gap, grab the ledges to traverse left, and open the bulkhead door. The Q-Watch is handy here for triggering electrical boxes and ladders to slip past pirates, and a stereo can be used to pull guards away before you drop down.
009's vessel is rigged. Move carefully — disarm tripwire grenades and pick your way past laser triggers as you work toward his quarters.
In 009's room, examine the evidence to piece together what happened to him. Part of the investigation has you use a telescope to spot the Transworld ship out on the water, tying 009's death to the wider plot.
The mission ends loud. Your cover blows and you have to fight your way back out, defending Greenway through a running gunfight and a tense escape from the wreck before you can leave the city.
There are 12 collectibles in The Past Never Dies. Several are locked behind the Laser Strap gadget (used to cut padlocks and break glass), so equip it before you explore the market.
- 6 of Bells (Card) — Arriving at Aleph: in the shipwreck-market bathroom along the left path.
- 9 of Acorns (Card) — Black Market: inside the fish tank (break the glass with the Laser Strap).
- Mauritania Postcard (Postcard) — Black Market: the fenced area by the red anchor (laser the padlock).
- Ober of Acorns (Card) — Black Market: in the cabinet behind the truck (laser it open).
- Delivery Box (Bawma) (Intel) — Black Market: at the stall just left of the shooting range.
- Ace of Roses (Card) — Black Market: in the corner room on the Fight Club rooftop.
- ATAC Device (Legacy Item) — Black Market: on a metal beam below the signal tower, during the crypto-wallet objective.
- Pirate Grillz (Memento) — Black Market: from the merchant under the red umbrella (available after you've raised $100k).
- Banner of Shields (Card) — Find 009: on the upper deck at the front of the tripwire ship.
- Photo of Greenway (John Greenway) (Intel) — Examine the crime scene: in the left cupboard of the end room.
- Crocodile Tooth (Memento) — Leaving Aleph: behind the Land Rover, on a crate.
- 6 of Shields (Card) — Find a way inside the shipwreck: on a barrel after the zipline.
Collectibles can't be permanently missed — anything you skip can be cleaned up later via Chapter Select.
- Equip the Laser Strap. Picked up back in Chapter 9, it opens locked cabinets, padlocks and glass cases — multiple collectibles here need it, so keep it on before you enter the market.
- Don't grind every money job. You only need $100,000. Run the two or three that fit your style and skip the rest unless you're chasing challenges.
- Mind the challenge routes. This chapter's challenges split into Pacifist (no kills), Ghost (no detection) and Assault (aggressive) styles; clearing them all unlocks the Mauritania TacSim outfit.
- Scout before you commit. It's a big sandbox — tag patrols with Focus and plan a quiet entry before triggering anything loud.
- Save the noise for the finale. The escape is a forced firefight anyway, so stay stealthy through the market and the boats and conserve ammo for the way out.
